Many feared dead as explosion rocks Benue community [PHOTOS]

Scores have been reportedly killed in a fuel tanker explosion at the Amoke village of Apa Local Government Area in Benue State.

The People of Amankpaka-Ugwuogo Nike community in Enugu East Local Government Area of Enugu State have dismissed claims that their land was forcefully taken by the Enugu State Housing Development Corporation, ESHDC.

In a joint statement titled: “Hard Truth about Land Transactions with Enugu State Housing Development Corporation”, Amankpaka Community, they said they were in total agreement with the government agency.

They said they were smiling today as one of the beneficiaries of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi’s many democracy in action projects and urged the governor through the Enugu State Housing Development Corporation to ensure speedy completion of the project ,which according to them would automatically transform the community.

In the words of the Chairman Board of Trustees Amankpaka Community, Mr Gab Onu “all the community organs are in agreement and gave their consent for the ESHDC to develop the land noting that the Community appreciates what they are doing.

“In 2014, the community entered into an agreement with one Dr. Frank Chukwu to help us get a buyer for the land. When we noticed that he wanted to get the Certificate of Occupancy in his name without payment as stipulated in the agreement, we wrote to the Ministry of Lands to stop him and the “C of O” was obtained in the name of Amankpaka Community.

“For more than three consecutive times, Dr Chukwu had failed to bring any buyer for the land; he appealed to us to extend the time which we obliged, but he failed, until 2020 when we approached the ESHDC and entered into agreement with them. We are surprised to hear that few people went on air to twist the whole story. That’s wicked and selfish.”

Also speaking, the traditional head of the community, Chief Damian Ikechukwu Ede said that before now, “the said land was being used as a hideout by criminals,” noting that the Enugu State Housing Development Corporation followed due process in acquiring the land.

“By God’s grace I am above 70yrs. I am an Engineer by profession and have served meritoriously for 35yrs. I should know what is good for my people. These our sons claiming what they are not and spreading falsehood in the media just wanted to scare developers away from our community.

“The public should disregard them. They are just land agents who believed they could have gained more as individuals if the land was sold than the collective interest of the community, which the ESHDC has brought,” he stated.

Also speaking, the Youths Chairman of Amankpaka Community, Mr Joseph Obinna Onu and the Secretary, Mr Vitalis Oguegbe stated that all the youths were carried along in the whole process and advised those spreading propaganda to join them in moving the community forward.

Lending his voice in support of other speakers, the representative of the oldest man in the Community,Mr Ede Sunday Joseph said his father as the Chief custodian of all the lands in the community gave his blessings to the ESHDC to develop the area and warned those lying against the community to desist to avoid incurring the wrath of God.

When contacted, the Managing Director, Enugu State Housing Development Corporation, Mr Chiemelie Agu said that the Corporation followed due process in acquiring the land.

Mr Agu reiterated the commitment of the Corporation, vis a vis Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi’s administration to the development of more rural areas.
